Day 1: Launching an Experiment to Change My Life
Day 1: Launching an Experiment to Change my Life
I think we’re all familiar with the feeling of knowing that you’re meant for more, but keep doubting and getting in your own way. Maybe you’ve also thought to yourself, “I want to change my life, but I just don’t know how to get there.”
It could be that we’re not even sure what to go after and what our dreams are. (Although I’d argue we generally do know or at least have an idea we’d like to try, but block it from coming through because of fear). Or maybe we do know, and then it’s so often followed by a “but…” and all the reasons we can’t, have to stay where we are, or things we “have” to do first. This can look like:
- “I want to travel, but I’d have to work remotely and the job market is awful right now.”
- “I’ve always dreamed of opening my own coffee shop, but even though I hate my current job, I’ve got to stay and save up more first.”
- “It would be amazing to write a book and I have the perfect idea for one, but I just don’t have the time right now.”
You get the idea.
I know this is what I’ve been doing lately, and more than anything I’ve been in the “I don’t know what to do with my life,” camp.
I’ve been driving myself crazy spiraling about what to do, doubting everything, and confusing myself out of taking any action at all. It’s exhausting.
Christine Kane from The Soul-Sourced Entrepreneur calls this decision fatigue. She likens it to “propping a metaphoric car on cinder blocks, tossing a brick on the gas pedal, and letting the engine just run and run. It leaves you feeling incapable and pooped. The prefrontal cortex just keeps spinning in the background, but no destination is reached.”
Can anyone else relate?
Now it’s gotten to the point where it’s become too painful to keep living small and making excuses. Where it’s more uncomfortable to hide and avoid than to just take the “scary” action steps already. But a voice deep inside kept trying to tell me that nothing would ever change. And I kept wondering what it would take to actually change my life.
That’s when I decided to turn this very question into a year-long experiment. The goal? To break down exactly what it takes & how to reach seemingly impossible goals.
What are the big and especially the little steps in between that actually make a difference? How do we get over ourselves and the self-doubt and “but’s”?
That’s the purpose of the experiment, is to answer the question, “I’ll do this by:
- Starting a podcast and interviewing guest speakers who overcame all odds to create their dream lives, and discuss how they did it
- Acting as the test subject of the experiment by implementing what the guest speakers recommend into my life, finding out what works and doesn’t
- Breaking down for you guys all the things that really made a difference along the way.
Once I decided to do this experiment and shoot for seemingly impossible goals, I was freed from the shackles of indecision and “not knowing.” Suddenly I knew exactly what to aim for. I also wanted the experiment to be measurable and have a clear start and end point. So below is what I landed on. The end point goals are simply those ideas that I haven’t been able to get out of my head. That was how I decided.
Starting point: |
End point: |

So if you can relate to this feeling of knowing there’s more out there for you and are tired of getting in your own way, please follow along. I’ll break down everything I learn and all the highs and lows of this experiment to demystify the “in-between” from where you are to where you want to be. Hopefully, we can get UNSTUCK together.
Here’s what to expect going forward:
